South Ontario Limestone Quarries, Celestine

Only recently have nice celestine crystals been encountered at the Lafarge Quarry. They tend to be shattered from their matrix by the violent blasting required to fragment the rock but once in a while we find intact crystals ranging from pure white through shades of blue to colourless. They almost always are speckled with tiny marcasite crystals. Here are some nice examples.

  • Two larger celestine crystals grace this piece. The top one is a well-terminated crystal wit ha tinge of blue and yellow. Pare of the back of the crystal is missing but that is not noticeable from the display side. The smaller crystal is a composite, white crystal. The little sparkly crystals you can see on the dolostone are all small celestine and calcite crystals. Very nice display piece!

  • Excellent specimen of celestine that is composed of one large crystal with a number of smaller ones attached to it. The crystals all have a light blue colouration in the body and white terminations that are sort of feathered. Tiny marcasite crystals are peppered here and there inside the celestine crystals. Excellent luster. Hard to come by clusters like this! Displays perfectly.

  • A large, multiply-terminated celestine crystal that was crammed into a "sand pocket". It is morly complete but on the right side and a little of the top, it contact the walls of the vug and so has that odd granular, purple look at the areas it contact the walls. Ex J. Betts collection. t

  • A couple of lustrous, thick-tabular celestine crystals held together by a couple of transverse crystals. The bigger crystals have a bluish interior and a yellow tinted exterior layer. Dense since it is almost all celestine! some areas of tiny calcite crystals on the specimen.

  • A singly terminated, well-formed, celestine crystal. The crystal is grayish white with, perhaps a hint of blue and has kind of a hoppered semi-multiple termination. Dense! Nice example.

  • A beautiful, excellent example of this strontium sulphate mineral. It is a large, thick tabular, singly terminated, light blue crystal with multiple terminations as I have tried to show in the close-up photo. A couple of bits of limestone matrix attached and contacted on the back where it was attached. Really nice, heavy crystal!

  • This specimen is a fragment of limestone that has its top largely covered with thick-tabular, light blue, glassy celestine crystals. The crystals are unusual since the celestine crystals from "Dundas" are usually just transluscent or opaque. Nice!

  • A nice cavity of light bluish celestine crystals associated with similar sized calcite crystals. There is a slightly purplish tinge under some of the celestines which I believe is due to high fluorine content. The celestine crystals are gemmy and lustrous. Nice example!

  • A really nice small cabinet specimen of this strontium sulphate mineral. Light blue, fairly gemmy celestine crystals largely cover the front and top of this limestone matrix. The crystals have a light, gemmy blue colouration in the prisms and a more translucent white colouration in the terminations. Not feathery terminations like many celestine crystals from this location but sharp faceted terminations. Displays perfectly!

  • Such a nice combination! A light blue celestine crystal is almost totally covered by light golden scalenohedral calcite crystals on one side and bare of calcite crystals on the other side! This find was back in the 80's.
