Jeffrey Mine, Asbestos, Quebec, Pectolite

The Johns-Manville Company started the modern version of the Jeffrey Mine in 1918 and until recently, under different ownership, the Jeffrey Mine operated on what is the largest asbestos orebody in the western world. Unfortunately, due to health concerns and asbestos substitution and declining prices, the Jeffrey Mine is now closed. It is controversial as to what extent asbestos is a hazardous material. What is not controversial is the large volume of magnificent crystals and species that were produced over the decades. I recently was able to obtain some excellent specimens, particularly pectolite and prehnite from an old cache. Like real estate, "They aren't making any more".

  • The top of this specimen is a open space that is lined with pectolite crystals. The pectolite crystals are actually bundles of crystals in a slim, "bow tie" kind of habit. There are tiny dark crystals on the pectolites that look like dirt, as first but, upon examination, are sharp, green, tabular crystals that I am calling chlorite, although they could be something else. Interesting and nice specimen of pectolite!
