Grenville -Corundum Localities

There are a number of localities in the Grenville where you can find well formed crystals of corundum, one of the hardest minerals known. These occurence are all nepheline syenites that have zones of corundum crystals, usually elongate, tapered crystals. For a number of years Canada (Southern Ontario) was THE prodcer od corundum for the world. Here are some examples from some of the mines and prospects.

  • Craigmont Mine
  • Renfrew County
    Ontario, Canada
  • This specimen shows two corundum crystals at almost 90 degrees to each other, with a phlogopite crystal between them. Behind the phlogopite are to smaller corundum crystals that enable the specimen to sit perfectly for display! Hard to believe that this was "high grade" ore for what was once the larges corundum mine in the British Commonwealth many years ago!
