Svanbergite, Dolomite, Mount Brusiloff Mine, Radium Hot Springs, British Columbia

The magnesite mine at Mt. Brussilof has operated since 1982. The orebody consisted of many millions of tonnes of high grade magnesite. The magnesite has been mined and processed into several different products including and acid neutralizing agent in the pulp and paper industry, an animal feed supplement and special refractory for use in the steel industry. (I always thought they mined it for use in "Milk of Magnesia!). Most people are familiar with dolomite and magnesite. If you are not familiar with svandbergite, it is a phosphate and a member of the beaudantite group and is a strontium phosphate. Looks like orangey goyazite, to me. Excellent crystals which, although are tetragonal, look like isometric cubes with octahedral truncations on the cube corners. That is why I call them "pseudocubes". The specimens shown here have sharp crystals in the 1-2 mm size range. Here are some very nice examples of svanbergite.
As well, there are superb examples of the mineral dolomite occurring at this mine. Crystals are often gemmy and twinned. Here are some very nice examples!
