HOWLITE, Iona, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia ,Canada

Here are some exemplary specimens of howlite, some of the best examples of this mineral being offered anywhere.
Many people are familiar with nodular howlite. These specimens are different in that all have excellent clusters of terminated crystals! This is the only place in the world that produces large crystals of howlite -the best in the world. There is a locality in California that produces micro crystals of a substantially different habit. All of these specimens look great and have a number of great crystals. They occur on the shore of Bras Dor Lake on Cape Breton Island, embedded in extremely hard anhydrite. As the waves of the lake lap against the boulders sitting in the water, the anhydrite turns to gypsum and the howlite crystals are exposed as the waves wash away the gypsum!!! Fantastic but true!
