Manganite, Caland Ore Properties Mine, Atikokan, Ontario

This mine produced some excellent manganite crystal specimens, many rivaling those from Harz Mountains, Germany. Well, If these were from Harz Mountains, they'd have much higher price tags on them! The Caland Ore Properties Mine mined iron ore next to Steep Rock Iron Mines and paid a royalty to Steep Rock for every ton of ore mined. The Caland Ore Properties Co. was a subsidiary of Inland Steel and ceased production at Atikokan in 1980. These specimens came from high manganese zones in the pit.
