Almandine and Staurolite, River Valley, Dana Twp, Ontario

The "River Valley" locality has been known for many decades and, in fact, there are probably several localities in that area. Deep red, almandine crystals are recovered from the coarse biotite schists of the area. The crystals show crystal forms that are the dodecahedron and trapezohedron with variations between. The crystals appear round but are always sharp crystals with many oscillating faces of the above isometric forms.
More recently, staurolite crystals, although much rarer than the almandine, have been recovered from the schist. The crystals are well formed, chisel-tipped, pitch black and VERY difficult to photograph in the pitch-black biotite schist. Here are some nice examples.
