Quartz, var Amethyst, La Manche Mine, Placentia Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador

The La Manche Mine is a very old mine located near the head of Placentia Bay on the island of Newfoundland. The vein was discovered in the 1840 and had a checkered history of production from 1857 to the 1890s. A company tried to resurrect it in the 1920's but the depression killed it again! The mineral of interest was galena. Lead has always been a tough metal to mine at a profit. Old reports indicated that the ore vein was very vuggy! That was interesting! Recent prospecing uncovered part of a vein on surface. The weathered vein appears to be composed of, mostly galena, quartz and oxidized minerals. The quartz is of particular interest because it is the variety amethyst. Some very attractive clusters and plates of amethyst have been recovered from the vein and here are some nice example! .
