Arizona -79 Mine, Gila County

Originally discovered in 1879, the 79 Mine was last worked as a Pb-Zn-Ag-Cu, etc mine in the 1930s. Workings go down to 500 feet or so and there are 10,000 feet of headings! It has been operated for specimens off and on over the years and is currently an active specimen mining claim- off-limits to collectors. Here are some excellent specimens from this old-time mine.

The small hemimorphite crystals are colourless but have aurichalcite needles formed in them which gives them all a nice blue appearance!

  • Here is an interesting specimen! The matrix is probably mostly hemimorphite with open spaced lined with clear, colourless hemimorphite crystals. The to of the specimen which is part of a large vug shows platy calcite crystals on the hemimorphite crystals. To one side is a spray of aurichalcite crystals. As well there are other vugson the piece one of which shows excellent sprays of aurichalcite crystal sprays on hemimorphite. Very nice!

  • Beautiful sprays of acicular, blue aurichalcite crystals are in a number of hemimorphite vugs across the top of this specimen. The aurichalcite crystal sprays have tiny calcite and hemimorphite crystals suspended in and between the aurichalcite needles. If you look carefully, you'll see that light green smithsonite underlies the carpet of hemimorphite crystals. Interesting AND beautiful!

  • Here is a great-looking specimen and interesting in many ways. The star of the specimen are the light blue, radiating acicular aurichalcie crystals, protected in the back of the vug. The vug is mostly lined with bladed colourless hemimorphite crystals and white disc-like calcite crystals. The original liningof the vug were small smithsonite crystals that can be seen here and there on the specimen. At the front of the specimen is an area of green-blue that is a grouping of small clusters of botryoidal chrysocolla. Very nice!

  • There are two phases of hemimorphite on this specimen. The most obvious are the light blue hemispheres of hemimorphite which are, when examined closely, tight aggregates of radiating crystals. The sparkling colourless crystals in the vugs are also sharp individual hemimorphite crystals. Good-looking example!
