Morocco, Mibladen -Cerussite, Baryte

At Mibladed, relatively near the town of Midelt, there are a number of abandoned lead mines, most recently worked by French mining companies. The workings have been abandoned by the French for years but artisanal minerals have worked the abandoned mines for mineral specimens of cerussite, barite and vanadinite for years. Here are some nice examples of cerussite crystals, some with nice barite crystals.

  • Sweet! Really nice twinned crystals of cerussite perched on barite crystals and an earlier generation of cerussite. The crystals perched on the barite crystals are superb cyclic twins. The "crested" barite crystals are nice as well with reddish, hematite highlights. Have a look at the close-up. Nice piece!!

  • A larger, 20mm cerussite crystal sits amongst smaller cerussites and barite crystals on this specimen. The cerussites sit on a layer of an earlier generation of cerussite and galena. The larger crystal has a clear, smoky appearance. Great looking piece!

  • This specimen is an interesting geological as well as mineralogical specimen. It shows a vug in intergrown barite and galena that is fully lined with lustrous, twinned, sharp, cerussite crystals. The cerussite was derived from the decomposition of the galena! Great looking piece!

  • Here are a few pictures to show you the environment that these specimens come from -old room and pillar mines in sediments, near Mibladen. Most of these specimens are excavated from pillars and old stope walls by artisanal miners. You can see barite and galena mineralization in the photo's. Also me chiseling away trying to collect some, when I visited Mibladen several years ago. I have to hand it to the miners, it is hard work!
