Peru -Quiruvilca Mine -Hutchinsonite

Hutchinsonite is a rare thallium bearing sulphosalt. Although the type locality is the Lengenbach quarry, arguably, the best crystals come from the Quiruvilca Mine where they occur in the Central "Enargite Zone" of the deposit. The specimens on this page all have many hutchinsonite crystals on them. Interestingly, you can see internal red reflections in/on many of the crystals, like a "ruby silver" mineral. These crystals are a "ruby thallium" mineral!

  • This mound of small, yellow-orange orpiment crystals has spaces between the orpiment that hold many superb hutchinsonite crystals. The hutchinsonites show excellent, complexly terminated crystals. They are lustrous and well formed terminated prisms, often in divergent groups. The orpiment is in sort of rounded groups of crystals, the outermost ones, abraded. Orpiment is extremely soft. Still, there are many great crystals to view and, if you like, photograph.

  • Lots of hutchinsonite crystals on this mixed matrix of quartz, pyrite and other sulphides. There are lots of hutchinsonite crystals on both sides of this piece, many broken but many more excellent, undamaged crystals.!
