Nanisivik Mine, Arctic Bay, Baffin Island, Nunavut, Calcite, Dolomite and Quartz

There are other interesting and well formed minerals at the long-closed Nanisivik Mine besides pyrite and sphalerite. The cavities in the permafrost also sometimes contain calcite, quartz and dolomite crystals.

  • This is an interesting piece! It shows a very curved, sharp dolomite crystal sprinkled with small dolomite crystals. The dolomite sits on a matrix of pyrite pseudomorphs after elongated marcasite twins.

  • A good-looking plate of dolomite crystals, lightly encrusted with sparkling, twinned crystals of marcasite. The dolomite crystals actually have a light veneer of calcite crystals that are oriented on the dolomite. Epitaxy. Displays well.

  • Dolomite often occurs in, curved "saddle shaped" crystals. Here is an exemplary example of that form. This highly curved crystal shows a very exaggerated curved rhombohedral form and is nicely perched on bladed, pyrite pseudomorphs after marcasite. As well, the dolomite crystal is speckled with small marcasite crystals. Very interesting piece from the long-closed Nanisivik Mine!

  • A large mound of lustrous, iron-tinted, pearly, curved dolomite crystals with many bladed pyrite crystals embedded in the bottom. The dolomite crystals are sprinkled with 2mm, or so, pyrite crystals. Many of the pyrite crystals have marcasite crystals formed on them in oriented overgrowth. The marcasite crystals overgrow the pyrites either totally, partially or not at all. Very interesting!

  • This is a cluster of slightly curved, very sharp dolomite crystals that have a veneer of oriented calcite crystals on the faces. Epitaxy! A myriad of sparkling marcasite crystals are sprinkled over the specimen. Also some pyrite crystals in a couple of spots. Nice specimen from this long closed base metals mine, one of the most northern in the world! Displays very well.
