Calcite Pseudomorphs after Ikaite, Eureka, Ellesmere Island, Nunavut

From time to time I run into geologist or collectors that have visited the extreme far north of Canada. Sometimes they bring back some pretty interesting minerals from VERY remote places. Here are some from places you've probably never heard of!

The calcite pseudomorphs from Ellesmere Island are particularly interesting. They have weathered out of shales on the sea shore and were picked up by a geologist working in the area. All have some crystals tips missing on sme part of the specimen but all have a very good viewing angle. Very sharp!

  • An excellent example of this type of pseudomorph. The form of the previous ikaite crystals is faithfully preserved by the calcite. It should not really be in this category of Nunavut pseudo's but I think if you were interested in such items, you would certainly look here! The only one that I have.
