South Ontario Limestone Quarries, Celestine

Only recently have nice celestine crystals been encountered at the Lafarge Quarry. They tend to be shattered from their matrix by the violent blasting required to fragment the rock but once in a while we find intact crystals ranging from pure white through shades of blue to colourless. They almost always are speckled with tiny marcasite crystals. Here are some nice examples.

  • Two larger celestine crystals grace this piece. The top one is a well-terminated crystal wit ha tinge of blue and yellow. Pare of the back of the crystal is missing but that is not noticeable from the display side. The smaller crystal is a composite, white crystal. The little sparkly crystals you can see on the dolostone are all small celestine and calcite crystals. Very nice display piece!

  • A very well formed, singly-terminated celestine crystal showing sawtooth indentations on the sides of the prism. The crystal is essentially white or colourless but has a yellowish colouration closer to the tip of the crystal. Nice specimen of this strontium sulphate mineral1

  • Excellent specimen of celestine that is composed of one large crystal with a number of smaller ones attached to it. The crystals all have a light blue colouration in the body and white terminations that are sort of feathered. Tiny marcasite crystals are peppered here and there inside the celestine crystals. Excellent luster. Hard to come by clusters like this! Displays perfectly.

  • A purplish coloured celestine crystal from a "sand" pocket. These crystals have inclusions of fine-grained "sand" which is really thousands of tiny calcite crystals. Not sure why the crystals have the lavender hue, though. Some say its due to tiny inclusions of fluorite or fluorine rich celestine. Nice, anyway!

  • This cluster of celestine crystals is from a "sand" pocket. The clestine crystals seemed to have grown in a nest of tiny calcite crystals encapsulating many of the calcite crystals within. The tops of the celestines are free of calcite crystals. Nice!

  • A large, multiply-terminated celestine crystal that was crammed into a "sand pocket". It is morly complete but on the right side and a little of the top, it contact the walls of the vug and so has that odd granular, purple look at the areas it contact the walls. Ex J. Betts collection.
