Collinsite, Francois Lake, British Columbia

The locality at Francois Lake is the type locality for collinsite. The bands of collinsite occurs in a matrix of, largely thick, banded hydroxylapatite with varying amounts of black, "asphaltic pyrobitumen" hydrocarbon, also referred to as "Asphaltum". The deposit at Francois lake was originally described as a "vein" of phosphate minerals with asphaltum at the interface between two Tertiary andesitic lava flows. Some people have questioned wheteher it is a vein or guano deposits on an andesite outcrop, subsequently being covered by a later lava flow and being transformed into phosphate and carbon minerals. Some excellent ferrierite-Na and hydroxylapatite crystals in some of the specimens, in addition to the collinsite. Interesting!

  • The left side of this specimen is a kind of mixture of light coloured hydroxylapatite with veinlets of fibrous collinsite. The lighter coloured hydroxylapatite has many vugs lined with excellent microcrystals of hydroxylapatite in it. I've tried to photograph one but the contrast is weak. They really are very nice!

  • The top of this specimen of solid hydroxylapatite crystals is covered by small crystals, many very sharp, hexagonal doubly or singly terminated crystals. Some are partially coated with asphaltic pyrobitumen. As well, the bottom has a layer of black asphaltum. Interesting specimen!

  • A thick band of fibrous-platy brown collinsite dominates one side of this specimen while most of the rest of this specimen is banded, dark brown hydroxylapatite. There is also a layer of pitch-black asphaltum on the bottom of the specimen. Excellent specimen from the type locality for collinsite.

  • This is largely a hydroxylapatite specimen. There are two phases, the darker, solid hydroxylapatite on the left and the lighter, more porous hydroxylapatite on the right. The lighter phase has a number of cavities in it that are lined with gemmy, sharp hydroxylapatite crystals. Some of the cavities are filled with alphaltic bitumen on the apatites. There is thin 2-3mm thick phase of platy collinsite between the light and dark. Very interesting specimen!

  • This is the best botryoidal hydroxylapatite specimen in the group. The top is all hydroxylapatite, some clean, dark brown botryoids and some coated wit ha greay mineral. On the bottom, there are small cavities full of sharp crystals that I think arte the zeolite heulandite. Nice specimen!

  • This specimen has a band of collinsite crystals cutting through the middle of hydroxylapatite. The collinsite has been partially etched in places to provide open spaces lined with hydroxylapatite crystals and contain what appear to be free-standing collinsite crystals but what are really relict collinsite crystals. Also some Asphaltic pyrobitumen present. Pretty cool piece!

  • A very handsome specimen of solid, botryoidal hydroxylapatite. The apatite is banded and shows good botryoidal structure on the outside/top of it. Hard to come by a specimen like this!
