Francon Quarry, Montreal, Quebec, Weloganite, Etc.

The Francon Quarry is famous as a source of a number of rare minerals. In fact it is he type locality for many, including Weloganite, a strontium-sodium-ziconium carbonate, named after W.E. Logan, the first director of the Geological Survey of Canada. The quarry has been closed for many years and is slowly being filled in with clean land fill. Here are a number of excellent specimens of that mineral. They are fro ma 25 year old cache of specimens to recently see the light of day, again!

  • A couple of yellow, tapering crystals of weloganite are prsent in this vug in the top of a fragment of phonolite. One is a part crystal and the other is complete, tapering at both ends. There are a number of quartzcrystals in the vug as well.

  • A wonderful nest of sharp, yellowish weloganite crystals is perfectly exposed in this vug in phonolite. The crystals are classic, pseudohexagonal prisms with a light whitish outer coating and yellow internal colour. Excellent specimen1

  • This calcite-lined vug shows a superb, composite crystal of weloganite that exhibits some of the "pagoda" shapes that it can be found in. Very sharp crystals with a clean, white colour. Displays very well!

  • This vug has two weloganite crystals in it and lots of sprays and hemispheres of white silky dresserite scattered about. Nice association piece! Displays perfectly.

  • One single crystal of weloganite is fully exposed on this vuggy fragment of phonolite. The crystal is bruised somewhat but is still a very interesting crystal due to the intense colour.

  • A number of larger, very sharp weloganite crystals are nested in this shallow vug in phonolite rock. The weloganite crystals have very nice stria and sharp pseudohexagonal outline to show exhibit this mineral very well. There are also nice 2mm dresserite balls in the vug, as well. Displays well and is an exceptional specimen!
