Tanco Mine, Simpsonite

Simpsonite is a relatively rare mineral, essentially, a Tantalum/Niobium oxide. It is one of the tantalum ore minerals at Tanco Mine and is recovered in their milling process. It is also very fluorescent, with a fluorescence reminiscent of scheelite. Several of the samples contains white beryl which fluoresces a creamy white colour. Here are some very good examples of simpsonite with images in both white and UV short wavelength light. In some of the specimens the simpsonite is obscured by a "skin" of reddish tapiolite. Where the tapiolite has been torn away by the enclosing albite, the fluorescence of the underlying simpsonite is revealed. I hope that you find a specimen that is of interest.
