Mount Malosa, Zomba District, Malawi -Aegirine, Zircon, etc.

The Mount Malawi area host many alkalai pegmatitic intrusions that are beryllium rich. As well, many great crystal combination specimens of aegirine, zircon, quartz and microcline. The zircon crystals are lightly fluorescent yellow and the microclines are fluorescent red.

  • This cluster of crystals shows several, highly lustrous aegirine crystals on a matrix of small microcline crystals and a few zircons scattered about including one large cluster of zircon crystals. Nice example of an assemblage from this interesting place.

  • This cluster is mostly composed of zircon and quartz crystals. There are five or so smoky quartz crystals and the rest are composed of sharp, tan-coloured zircon crystals with a couple of microcline and aegirine crystals attached. It is an excellent example of zircon showing slightly tapered prisms with simple pyramidal terminations. And nice luster! Very nice piece!

  • Here is an interesting specimen! The large aegirine crystal on this cluster of microcline crystals is peppered with small zircon crystals. Actually, zircon crystals are all over this piece, most prominently on the aegirine. Nice fluorescence. Very good example of the prime mineralogy from this interesting area of the world!
