Arizona -Calcite Cave Growths, Southwest Mine, Bisbee, Cochise Co.

When the copper mines were active in Bisbee, on occasion, they would encounter caves, in the limestone country rock, lined with stalactites, stalagmites, calcite and aragonite crystals and other speleothems. The caves ranged from small to very large but, since they were accessible only through dangerous, active mining operations, the general public rarely saw them. Miners and intrepid mineral collectors have visited some of these subterranean rooms over the years and have recovered very nice calcite/aragonite specimens of various habits. Here are some from a large cave in the Southwest Mine. They may look pinkish on some screens but they are very white with red-brown iron oxide accents.
