Galena, Sphalerite, Pine Point Mine, Pine Point, Northwest Territories

This lead-zinc mine was discovered over a hundred years ago near Pine Point on the shores of Great Slave Lake but the remoteness of the deposits delayed development until 1965 when mining operations started. The mine exploited a number of rich surface deposits until 1988 when it closed.

  • A nice cluster of sharp, tetrahedral, dark brown sphalerite with a couple of rembling, sort of skeletal galena crystals. Some bruising. Interesting!

  • This one is pretty well solid sphalerite and consists of very complex, lustrous brown sphalerite crystals with a single calcite rhombohedron on the top! This was the ore mineral at the Pine Point Mine. Nice!

  • This specimen is mostly, sharp cube-octahedral thickly encrusting massive sphalerite matrix with lots of sphalerite crystals on one side and the back. Displays very well.

  • Here is a combination specimen that features mostly lustrous, brown sphalerite crystals associated with fairly clear crystals of calcite. Some galena crystals, as well. Crystals on all sides!
