David K. Joyce Minerals

Vlasovite, Gittinsite, Kipawa Alkaline Intrusive Complex, Sheffield Lake, Quebec.

Here are a couple of rare zirconium silicate minerals from an interesting geological environment. These specimens all considt of a mass of vlasovite, usually a rounded crystal, in deep pink eudialyte. In some of the specimens, the vlasovite has an alteration rim of white gittinsite or alteraered fractures of gittinsite. You'll see from the pictures. Some of the vlasovits have no associated gittinsite. Interesting and rare association!

  • A single crystal section of glassy vlasovite is embedded in massive, granular eudialyte. Very good cleavage exhibited by the vlasovite. Some gittinsite alteration rind here and there on the vlasovite. Shows well.
