Silver, Silver Bear Zone, Terra Mine, Camsell River Area, MacKenzie District, NWT

The Silver Bear Zone was originally staked in the 1940's as the YAW claims and then, eventually operated as part of the Terra Mine, off and on, from 1969 to 1985. It was significant silver mine producing about 14.5 million ounces of silver, most of it mined in native silver form, like at Cobalt or Silver Islet. The big difference at Silver Bear is that the silver is in veins had a high quartz component. The silver was often crystallized in dendritic form in the quartz-calcite. Here are some excellent examples!

  • This is a very heavy specimen composed of dendritic and disseminated silver with thin coating of an arsenide, probably skutterudite. About 2/3 of the specimen is composed of very rich, closely packed grains of native silver with dendritic silver on either side. Nicely polished on one side and rough on the other sides. They don't mine silver like THIS any more!

  • Very high grade, thickly packed, dendritic silver in quartz. The silver has a discontinuous coating of skutterudite and shows some erythrite around the edges. Polished on one side and rough on all the others. Very hackly, rich, silver!

  • Mineralogy of this specimen is simple. Just rich silver wrapped around and between quartz grains in this high grade specimen. Can't see any other minerals besides the wall-rock and breccia inclusions except a little bit of galena here and there. Polished on side. Rich!

  • A rich specimen of high grade silver showing rich native silver in and around quartz grains. Very little other mineralization besides the calcite between the quartz and the wall rock and a little bit of galena.

  • The core of this extremely rich vein is tightly packed silver grains, almost to solid silver. It almost seems to be a flowing mass of silver. There are sort of flow-bands observable in the silver. There are rounded aggregates of nickeline present at the edges of the silver. Polished on the front and rough the other sides. Awesome piece!

  • A stupendous specimen of well-formed, dendritic crystals of native silver thickly dispersed in a siliceous breccia. The breccia looks like fine grained rhyolite with jasper fragments. The silver is embedded in light pink-white calcite and is in very sharp dendrites. The piece is sawn on the bottom and the back to both reveal the texture of the silver better, if desired and to allow the piece to stand for display. Spectacular old-time specimen! Long closed mine!
