Nanisivik Mine, Arctic Bay, Baffin Island, Nunavut, Calcite, Dolomite and Quartz

There are other interesting and well formed minerals at the long-closed Nanisivik Mine besides pyrite and sphalerite. The cavities in the permafrost also sometimes contain calcite, quartz and dolomite crystals.

  • Here is an attractive specimen of three of the minerals that occur at Nanisivik. It is an attractive specimen that shows a row of orangey calcite crystals on dolomite crystals across the top back of the piece with a few other calcite crystals here and there. Some fairly sharp pyrite pseudomorphs after marcasite poke through the dolomite crystals here and there. Looks great!

  • A well-formed crystal of calcite that yo uoften see from Mississippi Valey-type sulphide deposits. The crystal is sigly terminated on one end and multply-terminated at the other end like it had been broken off of its matrix and then started to grow, again. Nice crystal!

  • A cluster of three smoky quartz crystals. The crystals are smokey, probably due to hydrocarbon inclusions and show signs of hoppering. They are singly terminated but the underside where they were separated from matrix show re-growth. Nice!

  • A nice cluster of calcite crystals with one dominant large crystal, with a little rock matrix attached. The large crystal has a couple of nick out of it, as you can see in the photos. Still it is a large, displayable calcite with nice colour from this remote mine. Stands exactly as shown in picture. Nice!

  • A great looking cluster of dolomite crystals on sparkling pyrite crystals. Some sphalerite, the ore mineral at Nanisivik Mine, in the matrix. One of the smaller dolomite crystals is cleaved off, as you can see in the photo's and there are a couple of bruises. Looks great, though, and displays well.

  • This plate of dolomite crystals is pretty well covered with marcasite and pyrite crystals. Interestingly, the pyrite crystals ALL are totally covered with oriented marcasite crystals on the pyritohedral faces. Very cool! A pair of calcite crystals on the top-front make this a very attractive specimen!

  • Here is a nice specimen of one of the more common minerals at Nanisivik Mine that we don't often see for sale in nice specimens! This piece consists primarily of one large crystal with a couple of smaller part and full crystals off to one side. The dolomite is a creamy, curved crystal with offset crystals all over it. There are tiny marcasite crystals peppered over the dolomite and a couple of nice calcite scalenohedral. Looks good!
