Tsumeb, Namibia, Calcite

Calcite is not a rare mineral in the world. Well crystallized specimens are not all that common, though! Calcite occurred in beautiful specimens from Tsumeb, as an accessory mineral. Here are some very nice reasonably priced examples.

  • This super plate of calcite crystals shows razor-sharp calcite rhombs with a creamy-white colour. Very lustrous! As well, the calcite crystals have a dusting of tiny green crystals that I believe are duftite. Shows well.

  • One large calcite crystal and a few smaller ones attached at the sides, on this sharp specimen. The calcite crystals show very stepped prism/scalenohedral faces and sharp, simple rhombohedral terminations. A slight pinkish colour. Nice!

  • Sharp, white hexagonal aragonite crystals are present in a recess in this matrix. The crystals are all stubby, hexagonal prisms with sharp, hexagonal pyramidal terminations. An index card from the old collection indicates that it was acquired in Johannesburg in 1976. Classic!

  • Lots of interestingly twinned, clear, colourless calcite crystals on this specimen from Tsumeb. The calcite crystals have little rounded patches of a iron or clay mineral here and there. A little damage. The crystals are an unusual habit!

  • A stepped, white-colourless calcite crystal with no other associated minerals. The lustre is very good and the crystal shows only the rhombohedral form with a minor pinacoidal modification.

  • A clean specimen of off-white, sort of shaggy calcite scalenohedra. The crystals are lustrous with coherent crystal faces near the middle of the crystals tending to more multiple terminations closer to the actual terminations of the crystals. Old Thames Valley Minerals label accompanies the specimen. Shows well!

  • This plate of calcite crystals shows sort of stepped, lustrous crystals tinted pink in colour. Some damage to the calcite crystals. The matrix is a mixture of carbonates and iron/manganese oxides. Nice!
