Millerite, Strathcona Mine, Levack, Ontario

The Strathcona Mine has mined large massive sulphide orebodies for decades. Relatively recent exploration activities have located high grade vein-like bodies of very high-grade copper-nickel-PGE that are proving very profitable to mine. In the past year or so, interesting occurrence, associated with one of these zones produced specimens consisting of veins of solid, pure millerite, bounded by bornite. So different from the acicular crystals of bornite that we are used to seeing! I was very fortunate to meet the miner who recovered these specimens. The millerite is very coarse and shows broad, mirror-like cleavage planes. Gorgeous, unusual pieces.
